Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at the Joint 3/31/08

Hey, Rockers........

2nd Set:
"Dirty Deeds" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals
"Rocks Off" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Til the End of the Day" (The Kinks) Brett lead vocals
"Just Like a Woman" (Bob Dylan) Waddy lead vocals
"Revolution" (Beatles) Brett lead vocals
"Bitch" (Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Down Payment Blues" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

Are you still with me? Okay........
What a great set list, huh? The band was all over the place with different moods and tempos last night, even adding 2 new songs: "Just Walk Away Renee" and "Just Like a Woman".

I have to admit when I heard them starting up "Just Walk Away Renee" I went WTF? But as soon as I heard those luscious harmonies Waddy, Jamie and Brett came up with, I was going "YEAH!" What a beautiful blend of voices! As I've said before....... 3 incredible singers in one VERY Rockin' band........ We're the luckiest audience in the country. Nah - in the world!!!!

Waddy blew us away with his vocals on "Just Like a Woman." Yeah, he's a fantastic guitarist (my fave!), but if anyone calls him "a guitarist", they haven't heard him sing. Clarity, depth, emotions..... It's all there! Did I say how lucky we are? :-D

All the tunes were played and sang to perfection. Of course, I like the way WWB does them better than the originals. Oh, you think I'm a bit biased? Hehe. All you have to do is listen to them live....... And come ALIVE!

Phil Jones arrived a bit late for the sound check, but without even taking off his jacket he was on that throne banging the skins like like he'd been doing it for hours. That's what a true professional - and Rocker - does! And Phil does it!!!

Rick Rosas came out early in the first set and welcomed us all. Rick doesn't come up to the mic that often, so that was a treat...... Then he picked up his bass and made thunder, sometimes matching Waddy's guitar note for note. Watch his fingers!

Brett Tuggle really wailed on his guitar solo on "Bitch". And his keyboards on "Just Like a Woman"...... ahhhhh ohhhh! He's not only a fantastic musician and vocalist, but one of the sweetest men you'd ever meet. Yup - lucky us!

Jamie Savko totally slayed me with his vocals, especially with his sustained notes on "Down Payment Blues" last night. And his harmonies? Killer! He's one of those singers who can learn a song in a few minutes then walk up to the mic and let it all come out without one off note. We're definitely lucky that he's in the Waddy Wachtel Band.

Waddy Wachtel....... What more can be said about such a musical genius? He was playing guitar on stage alone during the sound check with his back to us, and it was like a symphony. I kid you not. Donna turned to me and said "I can even hear a bass drum." He doesn't need a slew of pedals and rack mounts with special effects....... He can get all those wonderful sounds using just his magical hands. I'm always in awe and humbled.... And electrified!

Other notes:

During sound check, poor Waddy got a real jolt from the mic - any of you who've had that happen know how unsettling it can be! John Philbrick was johnny-on-the-spot trying to correct the error, and Waddy was ready to knock down a plank of the wood Dave just had put up on the stage so they could get to the wires causing the short. LOL Well, Charile (previous owner of the Joint) came up with a fix, and we were all happy to have our Waddy safe again.

Let's see...... What else? Oh, I almost forgot. Stevie Nicks dropped by earlier to say hi to the guys. No, she didn't sing. She left before most of us got there.

Yes, the Waddy Wachtel Band will be at the Joint this Monday 4/7/08! What a great way to start off the week Rockin' it up! The band probably won't be at TJ the following Monday 4/14/08 as Waddy will be doing a few out of town gigs with Stevie.

Sooooo. ....... I hope you enjoyed reading this and that you'll come down and Rock it up with us next Monday. If you wanna Rock and smile at the same time...... This is the place!

Rockin' Love-
Nina

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at the Joint 3/24/08

Hey rockers-

Yes, it was another incredibly delightful musical night at the Joint last night. I’m actually speechless! LOL Yeah, me!

I figured instead of telling you:
- Waddy Wachtel played his guitar in ways that sent electric impulses all over my body
- Phil Jones made my heart pump with every beat on his drums.
- Rick Rosas had me thumping with each quick pluck of the bass strings.
- Brett Tuggle made me feel alive - like a "Live Wire" - keyboards and guitar.
- Jamie Savko had my head delightfully soaring with his exquisite vocals.

Yeah...... Instead of saying all that....... I’ll give you the set list and a photo slide show of pics from last night in the order I took them.

Also.......... Keith Alison rocked like the true "Rock Man" he is, and it was wonderful to have Bernard Fowler thrilling us all with his vocals on "Heroes". Big thanks to both Keith and Bernard!

Oh...... And the Waddy Wachtel Band will be back at the Joint in perfect form next Monday night 3/31. If any of you can come but don’t - you’re really cheating yourself of one of the most exciting experiences you could have. Don’t take my word for it - just ask anyone who’s been there.

Rockin’ it up with you.
-Nina

Review: Waddy Wachtel Band at the Joint 3/17/08

Hi again, rockers-

What a treat it is to be able to give you a review of last night's Waddy Wachtel Band concert at the Joint last night. The boys were away from us for waaaay too long, and we all were so glad to have them back Rockin' us! And they were as happy to see us as we were to see them - complete symbiosis.

I'm always telling you rockers to come to the Joint early to catch the rehearsal/sound check, and it was wonderful last night. It's not really a rehearsal for these guys, as they're such incredibly talented and professional performers that the minute they pick up their instruments they fall right into the songs.

At the "early show" we got to hear:
"Rocks Off" - a Rolling Stones song the band had never performed before.
"Supermassive Black Hole" - a song by Muse they introduced last year and haven't played recently. They didn't play it in their later sets of the night, so we got an extra bonus song.
"Dog Eat Dog" - an AC/DC song the band used to play when Terry Reid was singing with them. They've played it at sound checks before, but included it in the 1st set last night with Jamie wailing on vocals.

Set List:

1st Set:
"All Down the Line" (Rolling Stones) Jamie Savko lead vocals
"Dog Eat Dog" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals
"Johnny Strikes Up the Band" (Warren Zevon) Waddy Wachtel lead vocals
"I Feel Fine" (The Beatles) Waddy and Brett vocals
"What's Next to the Moon" (AC/DC) Brett lead vocals
"Stop Breakin' Down" (Robert Johnson) Keith Allison lead vocals
"Poor Poor Pitiful Me" (Warren Zevon) Keith lead vocals
"The Girl's Got Rhythm" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals
"Won't Get Fooled Again" (The Who) Jamie lead vocals

2nd Set:
"Rocks Off" (Rolling Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Til the End of the Day" (The Kinks) Brett lead vocals
"The Loner" (Neil Young) Waddy lead vocals
"Ticket to Ride" (The Beatles) Brett and Waddy vocals
"Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan) Waddy lead vocals
"Pump It Up" (Elvis Costello) Keith lead vocals
"Bitch" (Rolling Stones) Jamie lead vocals
"Down Payment Blues" (AC/DC) Jamie lead vocals

There were lots of smiles last night - both on stage and in the audience. Everyone was so happy to be back together again, kicking up the dust and doing what we all love best........... Rockin' and Rollin' !!!!!!!!! There's just nothing like being at the wonderful Joint with fantastic performers playing fabulous songs in an atmosphere that's like a mini-concert. How lucky are we!!

Waddy's vocals and guitar solos brought new meaning to the word "electrifying". Whether he's playing his black Les Paul with the Bigsby, sending out sustained notes on his white Les Paul, moving his fingers down the neck effortlessly with a slide or letting his heart come out in his vocals........ we all become mesmerized.
Phil's drumming left no gaps - what a TRUE rock drummer.
Brett plays with the keys, sings and caresses his guitar strings in a way that makes you wonder if there's anything he can't do.
Jamie takes that mike into his hands, moves to the front of the stage, and releases his vocal chords in ways that would make anyone's ears stand up and take notice.
Al jumps right in on bass like it's the most natural thing for him to be doing - and it is. Nothing laid back about Al - he's got Rock in his soul.

Special thanks to Neil McDonald for doing such a great job on the sound board since George hurt his hand. Neil's a true professional, having toured as sound man with many top artists, and it showed in the bright, full, rich sounds he got for the guys.

Lots of other performers show up at the Joint because the music is so incredible and the guys in the band are delightful to be around. Last night Bernard Fowler was having a great time hanging around with everyone, and the lovely Kelly McGrath was beaming with her beautiful smile.

Dats it, folks! Oh yeah, for those of you who weren't able to come last night, the Waddy Wachtel Band will be back at the Joint next Monday 3/24 to wake us up and give us what we all want. Yay!

See you soon-
Nina

Tuesday news - we’ll be Rockin’ It soooon!!!

Hey rockers-

Yeah, it's been a long time since we got to hear some burnin' rock 'n' roll from the Waddy Wachtel Band, but we don't have to wait much longer. I hope these little notes of mine have helped those of you who're waiting to Rock It.

Waddy Wachtel, Phil Jones, Brett Tuggle, Jamie Savko and Al Ortiz will be back at the Joint this Monday 3/17. Yay! You might be wondering if you can really believe me.... since I ended up being wrong last week. Well, rockers, all the guys in WWB are in such great demand that we never know when they'll be called away for another "very important" gig. Just keep checking back here and I promise to let you know ASAP about all the upcoming gigs.

News about WWB:

Waddy is putting the finishing touches on the musical score he's writing for a new film. He's also finishing up some tweaks on the Stevie Nicks PBS-TV Soundstage show that will air later this year. He misses all of us and is really looking forward to picking up those beautiful Les Paul's and playing LOUD! Love it!

Phil is laying down drum tracks on some lucky artist's album. What a rockin' drummer!

Rick is still touring Europe with Neil Young. We miss him and look forward to him returning later this month.

Brett's been seen around town spreading his warmth and beautiful smile to other local artists. Check out his son's band's MySpace page - the Harm. Matt Tuggle is following in his dad's talented footsteps.

Al will be flying in from Phoenix to do this Monday's gig with WWB. Having him on the stage at the Joint with WWB is a real treasure.

Jamie's........ I don't know what Jamie's up to. But whatever it is, I'm sure it Rocks! And I know he'll bring that incredible voice of his to the Joint this Monday to wow us.

Other news:

I've added more pages, photos, audio and video to the Waddy Wachtel Info web site. You can check them out here:

http://waddywachtelinfo.com/

Thank you so much, Masae, for the additions of those wonderful Japanese artists Waddy played with. Any other contributions by the rest of you are always welcomed and appreciated.

Now.........
Let's get on to what's the most important thing........
Rockin It!!!!!!!!!
The music says it all, and the Waddy Wachtel Band says it in the most fantastic way.

See many of you Monday-
Nina
